Glerups shoes, slippers and boots are known for their exceptional comfort. This is due to the foot-shaped and unique design combined with the softness and warmth of the wool.
The classic grey felt boot has been manufactured since the company’s founding, and has formed the basis for development of new product designs for our collection.
The designs are also based on a long tradition of hand felting, which we have transformed into innovative products of highest quality. The craft has been translated into Glerups.dk’s industrial production where parts of the production are still done manually, since they require a special skill to accomplish. A manual dexterity which cannot be replaced by machines.
Simplicity and optimal use of the attributes of the natural material are the basic elements when developing the product range. Through these we aim for the optimum mix of functionality, beauty and durability. The result can be described in three words:
Beautiful – Natural – Warm
We use 100% pure and natural wool for all of our slippers. The slippers have either a sole of semi-vegetable tanned calfskin or natural rubber (except for the baby shoes, which have no outer sole).
The wool is naturally processed and the product is closely followed all the way from sheep to your foot. The wool is washed in soft water and then carded. The carded wool is made into socks and felted by using steam. Finally, the soles are glued and sewn onto the socks, before the final finish makes the slippers ready for shipment.
It has always been a clear objective to produce all our products with care for human and environment. Therefore, we clean (the extent possible) the wool mechanically to avoid all unnecessary chemicals, and we use only colours that are free of heavy metals and toxic azo-dyes. We also offer single uncoloured products in natural brown and off white.
We use semi-vegetable tanned leather, while using chrome-tanned leather for many of the other models. We buy the skins from a European tannery, which meets the strict environmental requirements of the EU. The skins is tanned using the most modern and environmentally friendly methods, and the skins are free of PCP, AZO dyes and Chromium-VI.
A hobby that grew
In 1993 Nanny felted a pair of boots for the first time, and the wool came from her own Gotland sheep. The felted boots were well received among friends and family, so well, that Nanny started a small hobby production. This paved the way for the company Glerups.
The development of the production
In the beginning Nanny could only felt two pairs of boots a day. Since then, Nanny and her husband Ove have worked hard in order to develop and improve the product and production technology. Several machines have been invented and discarded, making Glerups capable to keep up with demand from addicted customers worldwide.
The characteristics of wool are unique
The unique composition and processing of the wool makes the slippers warm and comfortable, even if you wear them barefoot.
The wool is breathable and can capture up to 35% moisture making the slippers feeling dry and warm always. The combination of good wear resistance and high moisture absorption cannot be surpassed by any other material.
The shoes may ”shed”
Because of the natural treatment of the wool, you may still find traces of small vegetable fibers in the felt. Furthermore the coarsest wool fibers may work itself out of the felt, and therefore the slippers ”shed” in the first days of use. This is natural, and the fibers just need to be plucked off.
Wool is self-cleaning. However, if periodic cleaning is requiret, your Glerups can be washed in the washing machine on the ”wool”, ”hand wash” or ”delicates” program (max 30 degrees C.).
It helps to vacuum or blow your shoes clean of dust before washing.
After a spin-dry put your feet into the wet shoes. Pat your Glerups into shape, remove, and leave to air dry. Your Glerups love fresh air.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL
Natural rubber of leather soles may be slippery on wet and icy surfaces such as tile.
